CSCA 2018 Convention - Call for Submissions - Communication Education Interest Group

Difference

The Communication Education Interest Group is dedicated to the advancement of practical, pedagogical, methodological, and theoretical interests of its members. Our group equally values the multi-modal and multi-paradigmatic educational viewpoints and perspectives of its constituents, which include (but are not limited to) K-12, community college, and four-year college and university researchers/scholars/educators. We encourage the exchange of lively debate among our members and enthusiastically welcome the opportunity to engage in dialogue with CSCA members, interest groups, and (especially) with larger communities, organizations, and institutions beyond our own. The Communication Education Interest Group invites submissions for participation at the 2018 Conference. October 9, 2017 is the deadline to submit.

Proposals that incorporate the conference theme of “Difference” are strongly encouraged and will be given special consideration. A wide range of topics encompassing “Difference” within the Communication Education Interest Group are welcomed. In solidarity with the 2018 leadership of CSCA, we hope that this theme will inspire members to utilize critical and noncritical approaches to: conceptualize and complexify cultural differences, celebrate difference, problematize difference, explore intersectionality, and deconstruct why and how communication education scholars are reaching to make a difference in their/our communities. University and community partnerships are particularly welcome. Submissions inclusive of all paradigmatic and methodological perspectives in the communication discipline are welcomed and embraced. Competitive paper and graduate student submissions are strongly encouraged.

Additionally, to expand on possible submission and session proposal ideas, we wish to allow space for ‘Difference’ to be represented through the presentation of our communication scholarship, not just within it. For example, consider proposing sessions utilizing various visual/auditory techniques, interactive media/technologies, embodied/performative/artistic processes, dialogic/co-constructed praxis, critical engagement methods, etc.

• If you are proposing a creative or uniquely presented session, please indicate this during the submission process. All proposed sessions should meet typical, rigorous standards for high quality communication scholarship.

Awards:

The Communication Education Interest Group gives out several awards each year during our business meeting at the conference:

• The Gustav Friedrich Award, named after former CSCA President Gustav Friedrich, is presented to the top student competitive paper (inclusive to both undergraduates and graduate students). The recipient(s) will receive a $50 award and a top student paper award certificate.
• The top four competitive papers submitted to the interest group will be awarded certificates, with the overall top competitive paper being acknowledged and receiving the top paper award certificate.
• The overall top competitive panel of the interest group shall be acknowledged and receive a top panel award certificate (given to the person who submitted the panel proposal).
  

Guidelines for Submission:

• Papers: include reports of original research, thematic reviews of literature, or theoretical essays/position papers. Only completed papers will be accepted. Papers must conform to the most current APA standards and include a title, a brief abstract, and be at a limit of 30 pages (double-spaced, not including reference pages). The word “STUDENT” should be marked on all papers written by graduate student authors. If the paper will be a student debut, please type “DEBUT STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. Student authored papers do not include those co-authored with faculty members. Individual paper submissions should not contain identifying information (author name, university affiliation) in uploaded supporting documents. The same paper may not be submitted to more than one division. Submissions should be original work, by the authors named, not previously presented at this conference or other conferences, and not previously published. A Competitive Paper Submission Form must be submitted as a separate attachment along with the paper. This form is located on the CSCA website: csca-net.org

• Panels: are ideal for newer research areas, research or theoretical projects still under development (where fully-developed paper submission is not possible), and/or research topics that might stimulate and benefit from audience interaction and dialogue with presenting scholars. Discussion and paper panel submissions must include the following: (a) title, (b) description (75 words or less), (c) rationale (75 words or less), and (d) a complete list of participants (with short descriptions of what each participant would contribute to the discussion panel) along with their institutional affiliations, contact information (address, e-mail, and telephone), and if they are CSCA Members should be noted. Preference will be given to submissions with panelists representing multiple institutions rather than representing a single institution. Paper panels should also include titles and brief abstracts (100 words or less) for each paper. If a specific chair or respondent is wanted, please include the person(s) above information as well. Submitters must use the Discussion Panel Form or Paper Panel Form to submit these proposals. These forms are located on the CSCA website: csca-net.org

All media/technology requests must be made at the time of submission. Please only request media if it is absolutely essential to your presentation (and you are unable to provide it yourself) as media requests will be closely examined before approval. Laptop computers cannot not be made available for presentations. Your submission implies that you agree to follow appropriate presentation guidelines if your paper/panel is accepted (i.e., it is generally unprofessional to read your paper to those in attendance or take more time than what is allotted to you by the session’s designated chair).

All papers/panels must be submitted electronically using Microsoft Word. Documents sent using any other format will be returned to the sender. An email acknowledging receipt of proposals submitted will be sent for each submission within 48 hours of receiving it.
