CSCA 2018 Convention - Call for Submissions - Performance Studies & Autoethnography Interest Group

PERFORMANCE STUDIES & AUTOETHNOGRAPHY INTEREST GROUP
Call for Papers and Panels

Central States Communication Association (CSCA)
Annual Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
April 4-7, 2018
Difference

The Performance Studies & Autoethnography Interest Group invites the submission of competitive papers, interactive panels, performances, and innovative programming for the 2018 CSCA conference to be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Please note that the deadline for submissions is Monday, October 9, 2017.

Our interest group focuses on performance as a method of communication inquiry and as an embodied way of knowing and presenting information and autoethnography as a critically engaged production of scholarship. We invite scholars to attend to these interests at multiple levels and welcome a variety of formats, including live or mediated performances, roundtable discussions, spotlight sessions, and written performance studies scholarship.

We especially encourage members to address issues related to the convention theme of Difference. In honor of the theme of this year’s theme, we invite contributions that laud or problematize difference, explore intersectionality, define intercultural differences, scrutinize differences and deferrals of meaning, etcetera. We would particularly like to extend our unit call to disciplinary fields that recognize the value of adopting a performance lens, presentations that explore performance in everyday life, and mediated elements of staged productions. We also welcome the submission of panels and performances that are co-sponsored with other CSCA units. Please contact the Interest Group Chairs for help coordinating co-sponsored panels.

Awards:

Awards will be given for Outstanding Scholar, Top Contributed Paper, and Top Student Debut Paper.

Guidelines for Submission of Papers, Panels and Performances:

Papers: Only completed papers will be accepted. Papers must include a title and a 75-word abstract. Papers are assessed through a process of anonymous review. Please remove all information that identifies the author(s), including in the body of the text, in any headers/footers, and in Page Properties. Papers should not exceed 25 pages (including appendices and references). A Competitive Paper Submission Form must be submitted along with the paper. This form is located on the CSCA website: www.csca-net.org.

All students should type “STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. If the paper will be a student debut, please type “DEBUT STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page and indicate whether the author is a graduate or undergraduate student. To be considered a student debut paper, (1) the author must be a student, (2) the paper must have single authorship, and (3) the paper must be the author’s first paper to be presented at CSCA. Indicate if author(s) are CSCA members.

Panels: Discussion panels and paper panels must be submitted using the respective forms located on the CSCA website: www.csca-net.org. Please include a panel description of no more than 75 words and a rationale for the panel of no more than 75 words. Most panels should include at least four but no more five panelists. Special consideration will be granted to panels featuring participants from multiple institutions.

Performances: We invite completed performance scripts to be evaluated for participation on a “Contributed Performances” panel. To be considered for the contributed performance session, please clearly stipulate “Contributed Performance” on the first page of the script (so it will not be confused with the contributed paper competition). This panel is designed for short (10-15 minute) solo or duo performances. Performances must be electronically submitted as an attachment to the Interest Group Program Planner in Microsoft Word. Only complete performance scripts will be accepted.  Please note all audio/visual and presentation space requests (see below). Please see “performance panel” below for information on how to submit longer performance work and multiple performances on a theme.

Performance Panels:  We encourage submitters to consider a full-length one-person show, a full cast show, or a group of short (10-15 minute) thematically-related performances for the panel discussion submission type. Performance Panel Proposals must be submitted electronically as an attachment in Microsoft Word to the Interest Group Program Planner. In this document, please include a list of the participants’ full names, institutional affiliations, contact information (phone, e-mail, and postal address) and designation of membership in CSCA for each participant, program chair, and the respondents. The proposal should include a title, a 75-word rationale for the panel, and brief abstracts of each performance.

  • Technology Requests: Please indicate your AV requests in the text of your submission email and request media only if it is absolutely essential to your presentation, as media requests will be closely examined before approval. Laptop computers will not be made available for presentations. Include any requests for size and/or type of presentation space, especially for performances.

Send all submissions, including submissions for Outstanding Scholar, in Microsoft Word as attachments to:
