Borders & Breakthroughs
The Communication and Technology Interest Group invites submissions of competitive papers and panel proposals for the 2020 CSCA Convention. The purpose of the Communication and Technology Interest Group is to promote dialogue and scholarship on engaging issues within a technological context. Thus, in conjunction with the convention theme of Borders & Breakthroughs, we are seeking innovative and insightful research that explores how we communicate throughout and across digital means in our research and teaching, and the ways that technological boundaries can shape how we communicate as well as how technology can allow for communicative breakthroughs as it pertains to all areas in our field.
As communication scholars interested in issues pertaining to technology, we welcome a diverse range of topics including but not limited to the following topics that emerged in our business meeting: How people use technology in refugee crises; democracy in the age of the internet; online communities; political discourse online; use of technology in various contexts (i.e., politics, school, the workplace); health communication online, human-machine communication; virtual reality; and beyond.
With all of this said, if you are interested in being a part of panel focusing on one of the topics above or another topic that you have in mind and are in need of additional individuals, please join our CAT Interest Group Facebook page and begin asking for help, resources, or just start conversations. Short Course ideas and interest group sponsored event ideas are welcome as well, so please feel free to share those with the FB Group as well.
Paper Submissions
Papers may use any methodological or theoretical perspective (critical, rhetorical, qualitative, quantitative) and any formalized, consistent citation type (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.). Paper submissions (including polished scholarship-in-progress submissions) are limited to 30 double-spaced pages (excluding references, cover page, abstract, and appendices).
Paper submissions must include a title and a brief abstract. The names of authors and all identifying information should be removed from the paper. Students should include the term “STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. If the paper will be a student debut, please type “DEBUT STUDENT” on the upper-right hand corner. To be considered a graduate student debut paper, the author must be a graduate student, the paper must have single authorship, and the paper must be the author’s first paper to CSCA. The division will make awards for the top paper and top student paper.
Panel Proposals
Panel proposals should outline a rationale for the panel, provide an overview of the goals of the panel, and describe the panelists. Panel proposals may follow a traditional discussion-based format, may involve performative elements, may involve local community members in a dialogue to understand and address issues of injustice, or any other creative format. There will be strong preference given to proposals that include panelists from multiple institutions and contexts.
Awards
Awards are given to both top paper and top student paper.
The ComBotLabs Award goes to the top paper in the Communication and Technology Interest Group. The ComBotLabs Award is named after the Communication and Social Robotics Labs which is a research partnership between Autumn Edwards, Chad Edwards, and Patric Spence. The recipient receives a cash award ($50.00) and a certificate.
All technology requests must be made at the time of submission.
Submissions must be received by October 11, 2019 – 11:59 p.m. CST.
