CSCA 2019 Convention - Argumentation and Debate Interest Group Call for Papers

Hello Argumentation and Debate Interest Group Members!

Thanks for a great CSCA in Milwaukee this past year! The conversations were rich and nuanced, and we look forward to continuing the excellent Dialogue this year in Omaha.

Please consider submitting panel proposals this year. If you know of individuals who can’t physically attend CSCA this year due to other commitments (like AFA, other conventions, or family responsibilities) please consider putting together panels enhanced with digital presence. We have SO many ways to build dialogue together; let’s get creative and find ways to include all the voices possible!

Best,

Argumentation and Forensics INTEREST GROUP
Call for Papers and Panels

2019 Central States Communication Association (CSCA)
Annual Convention in Omaha, Nebraska
April 3rd-7th, 2019
Dialogue

The Argumentation and Forensics Interest Group invites all members of CSCA to submit competitive papers, programs, and interactive panels to be considered for the 2019 CSCA conference to be held in Omaha. The theme for the 2019 conference is “Dialogue.” We welcome a range of topics, and we especially encourage members to develop provocative panels that focus upon the convention theme.

The Argumentation and Forensics Interest Group promotes investigation of the practical, pedagogical, and theoretical dimensions of Forensic discourse. The Interest Group encourages research that uses an argumentative perspective to understand social problems, promote civic engagement, and encourage educational excellence in speech and debate training.

At the 2018 conference, we brainstormed several potential topics for submission. Potential submissions could include but are not limited to:

  • Funding forensic activities
  • Team dynamics and how they impact dialogue between teams
  • Exploration of the cross examination in IE final rounds
  • Coaching philosophy dialogue
  • Engaging forensic alumni in dialogue
  • Dialogue in coaching
  • Van talk
  • Coaching immediacy
  • Connecting high school and college programs through dialogue
  • Forensic traditions
  • Dialoguing with audiences outside of competition
  • Ideological differences between national tournament structures

We strongly encourage collaboration with other divisions to put forward joint panels. Consider seeking connections with related interest groups. Potential panels may include

  • Political polarization (connect with political comm or free expression group)

Remember that panels may extend beyond the traditional paper panel or discussion panel as well. Consider an alternative panel structure, such as:

  • Public debate on the purpose of debate (academic argument or access to all viewers)

Awards: The Argumentation and Forensic Interest group gives awards for the Top Paper, Top Graduate Student Paper, Top Panel Award (goes to the person who submitted the panel), and a Lifetime Award for Outstanding Contributions to Argumentation and Forensics at Central States Communication Association. The Top Paper Award winner will receive a plaque.

Guidelines for Submission:

Competitive Papers: Individuals proposing papers must complete the submission on the CSCA website* (see note below). The division only accepts completed papers. Papers must conform to APA standards. All papers must be submitted electronically using Microsoft Word. Documents sent using any other format will be returned to the sender. Papers must include a separate title page allowing author identity to be concealed. Remove all references of author(s) in the body of the paper. Indicate if author(s) is/are CSCA Members.

Students (including graduate students) should add “STUDENT” or “DEBUT STUDENT” to the upper right-hand corner of the title page. “Student” indicates papers that are solely authored by the student; faculty mentors/advisors may not appear as an author on a “student” submission. “Debut student” papers are the first paper submitted to CSCA by the student.

Discussion Panels: Individuals proposing panels must complete the submission on the CSCA website* (see note below). Panel submissions must include the following: (a) title, (b) abstract, (c) a complete list of participants, (d) a rationale for the panel, and (e) technology requests (please only request if essential to the presentation). Participant information must include the following: (a) their institutional affiliations, (b) contact information (address, email, and telephone), (c) if they are CSCA Members, and (d) a statement of their contributions to the panel. Preference will be given to panels with representatives from multiple institutions. If you anticipate a possible connection with another interest group, please note this in your rationale.

Paper Panels: Individuals proposing panels must complete the submission on the CSCA website* (see note below). Panel submissions must include the following: (a) title, (b) abstract, (c) a complete list of participants, (d) a rationale for the panel, and (e) technology requests (please only request if essential to the presentation). Participant information must include the following: (a) their institutional affiliations, (b) contact information (address, email, and telephone), (c) if they are CSCA Members, and (d) an abstract of their paper. Preference will be given to panels with representatives from multiple institutions. If you anticipate a possible connection with another interest group, please note this in your rationale.

Completed papers must be submitted electronically using Microsoft Word. Documents sent using any other format will be returned to the sender. Completed papers are not required when submitting a paper panel proposal.

Alternative Presentation Format: Please contact program planner for an alternative submission option appropriate to your format.

Submissions must be received by Wednesday, October 10th, 2018 at 11:59pm CST.

* CSCA will have a new online submission system. Details will be available on the CSCA website closer to the submission deadline.

Questions about submissions should be sent to: Julie Walker, Southwest Minnesota State University, argforensicscsca@gmail.com

An email acknowledging receipt of paper and panel proposals will be sent for each submission. If you require a laptop for your presentation, you must bring your own. Your submission implies that you agree to register for and attend the 2019 Central States conference in Omaha if your panel/paper is accepted. Further, you agree to follow appropriate presentation etiquette.
