CSCA 2019 Convention - MSIG Original Media Call for Papers

MEDIA STUDIES INTEREST GROUP ORIGINAL MEDIA
Call for Papers and Panels

2019 Central States Communication Association (CSCA)
Annual Convention in Omaha, Nebraska
April 3-6, 2019
Dialogue

The Media Studies Interest Group (MSIG) invites submissions of original media for the 2019 CSCA Convention. This year’s conference theme, Dialogue, provides an opportunity for media producers to explore dialogue as a subject of an original media piece and/or dialogue in the methods used to create original media content, be it through student-driven projects or student/faculty collaborations. The top Student Original Media winner at the 2019 conference may receive a cash prize (budget permitting).

Original media provide new and unique means to engage in academic pursuits and portray those messages to broad audiences. The MSIG welcomes submissions of original, traditional and new media that engage theory, pedagogy, or communicative phenomena. These submissions can include, but are not limited to documentaries, fictional narratives or non-narratives, public service announcements, new media texts, or other creative works of media. Such formats are appropriate for submission, especially those that include a focus on the theme of Dialogue.

Submissions should include two parts: 1) a pedagogical or theoretical rationale for the work (a rationale could be an accompanying full-length paper (no longer than 25 pages) written for the project or a 2-4 page rationale written for the submission), and 2) a link to view the work (to be included in the rationale/paper submission. Media submissions should not exceed 30 minutes in total length. Longer original pieces should be edited into a representative clip that can be viewed within the time limit. Given the collaborative nature of production work, we understand that multiple people work together to create these projects. In order to be considered student work, the project concept must have originated with students and must be primarily constructed through the work of students (80% of the credits on the film must be student credits).

Those interested in submitting should contact planner Jennifer C. Dunn at jdunn@dom.edu with a brief description of the media by September 15, 2018, to begin the submission process. Include a description of technology required for a presentation. Due to budget and access, the only technology that can be made available for your projects will be a multimedia projector and speakers that you can connect your laptop computers (or other equipment) to. There should be cables available for this, but there may not be Internet access readily available. Final submissions must be completed and submitted by October 10, 2018 at midnight (CST) on the new CSCA submission system.

CSCA will have a new online submission system. Details will be available on the CSCA website closer to the submission deadline. Questions and other communication about original media submissions and the Media Studies Interest Group may be directed to Chair and Program Planner, Jennifer C. Dunn (Dominican University) jdunn@dom.edu.
