CSCA SOGI Message & Reminder of Field Trip During Convention
Dear SOGI members,
On behalf of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Caucus of the Central States Communication Association, I send support and affirmation to each of you as we continue to confront loss, violence, and fear in our LGBTQAI+ communities.
Renee Good is one of many queer people we mourn and remember in our personal solidarity and professional advocacy, but since her murder happened in Minneapolis, where we gather next in April, it is important to pause and reflect on the particular spaces and places where we do this work. If you'd like to contribute with your time, money, or other efforts, then I encourage you to reach out to OutFront Minnesota.
I have reached out to OutFront on behalf of our caucus to see how SOGI can offer support when we convene in Minneapolis. I've also invited them to join us at our offsite social gathering at Queermunity, scheduled on the last afternoon/early evening of the conference: Saturday, April 18, at 5pm.
You can find more information in the CSCA Program, but I've also included the description here for your convenience:
Join the SOGI Caucus for a field trip social to Queermunity, a vibrant event venue, gathering space, and café in Minneapolis, dedicated to offering high-quality experiences for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities and their allies. We will meet in the lobby of the conference hotel at 5pm to coordinate ride shares. Queermunity, located at 3036 Hennepin Avenue, is open to the public daily from 8am to 8pm, with free general entry. Their space thrives thanks to café patronage, so let's buy some snacks and beverages as we chat about SOGI community and queer futures! A portion of these sales is reinvested into queer-affirming resources and free community offerings.
Queermunity is located less than a 10-minute Metro ride on the E Line (plus a collective 12-minute walk to/from the stations). I've attached a screenshot of the train schedule. I will send out an RSVP form closer to the conference. In the meantime, please mark your calendars and plan to join us if you aren't already scheduled at that time. Also, please peruse the conference program to bookmark SOGI offerings, which I'll send more details about in a future email.
Let's not let ongoing hostilities quiet our resolve. As Audre Lorde reminded us, let's use our anger to incite action:
"But anger expressed and translated into action in the service of our vision and our future is a liberating and strengthening act of clarification" -- Audre Lorde, The Uses of Anger, 1981.
Sincerely,
Danielle Stern
