Borders & Breakthroughs
Members of the Rhetorical Theory and Criticism interest group invite all members of CSCA to submit competitive papers, paper panels, discussion panels, spotlight panels, or other interactive panels that study theoretical, critical and empirical questions related to the field of rhetorical studies and communication theory to be considered for the 2020 CSCA convention. The theme for this convention is “Borders and Breakthroughs.” Like the convention organizers, we encourage submitters to both interrogate and think beyond the borders that often limit our interactions at conferences. When you are planning your panels and papers for 2020, consider ways that borders operate in our activities. Which borders (e.g., subject areas, research agendas and methods, ranks, and hierarchies) make sense and which borders need to be challenged? What breakthroughs (e.g., key works, innovative concepts, inspiring teaching perspectives) should we celebrate and extend? We welcome a range of topics, and we especially encourage members to develop creative and cross-interest group panels that focus on the convention theme.
At the 2019 convention, we brainstormed potential topics and ideas to guide our program planning. Potential submissions could include but should not be constrained by the following ideas:
Awards: The Rhetorical Theory and Criticism Interest group gives two awards. One is for the top competitive paper of the Interest Group, designated as the Karlyn Kohrs Campbell Award. The second award is given to the top competitive student paper of the interest group and is designated as the David Zarefsky Award.
Guidelines for Submission:
Papers: ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE DONE THROUGH THE ONLINE SUBMISSION SYSTEM, WHICH DEBUTED LAST YEAR. Details for how to submit using this system are available on the CSCA website. Only completed papers will be accepted. Only papers submitted via the online system will be accepted. Papers may use APA, MLA or Chicago-Style standards. Remove all references made to the submitter in the body of the document so as to maintain anonymity. “Student” papers are those authored only by a student. If the paper will be a graduate student debut, please type “DEBUT STUDENT” on the upper right- hand corner of the title page. To be considered a graduate student debut paper, (1) the author must be a graduate student, (2) the paper must have single authorship, and (3) the paper must be the author’s first paper to be presented at CSCA. Indicate if author(s) are CSCA members. Papers should not exceed 25 pages total. Faculty mentors/advisors may not appear as an author on a “student” submission.
Panels: ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE DONE THROUGH THE ONLINE SUBMISSION SYSTEM, WHICH DEBUTED LAST YEAR. Details for how to submit using this system are available on the CSCA website. All Panel submissions must include the following: (a) title, (b), abstract, and (c) a complete list of participants along with their institutional affiliations, contact information (address, e-mail, and telephone), and if they are CSCA Members. Preference will be given to panels with representatives from multiple institutions rather than representing a single institution. Each abstract should not exceed 150 words.
Be sure that all potential presenters create a profile on the CSCA convention webpage.
All technology requests must be made at the time of submission. Please only request media if it is essential to your presentation. If you require a laptop computer for your presentation, you must bring your own. Your submission implies that you agree to follow appropriate presentation rules if your paper/panel is accepted.
