Inspire

The Organizational and Professional Communication Interest Group invites the submission of competitive papers, panels, roundtable discussions, and innovative programming for the 2021 CSCA convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. The purpose of the Organizational and Professional Communication Interest Group is to promote the efforts of researchers, teacher/scholars, and practitioners as they relate to the study and practice of human communication in organizational contexts. Thus, any topic related to organizational and professional communication is welcomed.  

We especially encourage members to highlight issues related to the convention theme, Inspire. Organizations and workplaces have experienced tremendous change amid the COVID-19 pandemic and renewed calls to address systemic racism and other inequalities. The current milieu calls scholars to challenge the status quo and illuminate discourses and structures that inspire meaningful social change. For example, how can workplaces communication practices challenge traditional discourses of productivity to foster resilience and enhance concern for members’ well-being? What kinds of alternative organizing practices dismantle ideologies surrounding “ideal” workers to create more inclusive professional environments?     

Papers and panels from both established and new scholars that celebrate strong scholarship and suggest new directions for research, application, and teaching are encouraged. Faculty, students, independent scholars, and community members are invited to submit to and attend the convention. Submissions inclusive of all methodological perspectives in the communication discipline are expected and embraced. In terms of panels, preference will be given to those with panelists representing multiple institutions rather than representing a single institution.

Guidelines for Submission 

Competitive Papers:  Only completed papers that conform to APA standards and are submitted through the CSCA online submission process will be considered for acceptance. The CSCA online submission process will prompt users to provide the following information:

• Paper title
• Paper abstract
• Full paper with identifying information removed
• Author affiliations and contact information
• Technology requests

• Instructions for students:
  • Graduate and undergraduate students must type “STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page.
  • If the paper will be a student debut, please type “DEBUT STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. 
  • To be considered a student debut paper, (1) the author must be a graduate or undergraduate student; (2) the paper must have single authorship; and (3) the paper must be the author’s first paper to be presented at CSCA.

Panel Proposals: The CSCA online submission process will prompt panel submitters to provide the following information:

• Panel title
• Name of the person responsible for the panel proposal
• Panel member’s affiliations and contact information
• A 75-word rationale for the panel
• A 75-word description of the proposed panel, indicating roundtable discussion, paper panel (completed papers that encompass a specific topic), debate, spotlight, etc.
• A 200-word abstract for each paper if it is a paper panel submission or an explanation of each participant’s purpose/perspective if it is a different panel format
• Technology requests

The Top Competitive Papers and the Top Student Paper will be recognized at the Interest Group Meeting. 

Reminders:

• All technology requests must be made at the time of submission.
• Submissions must be received by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2020 AT 11:59 PM CDT.
• Send submissions electronically through our online system via the CSCA website. Submitters should create an author profile through the system. CSCA membership is not required to create a profile or submit a paper/panel.
