CSCA 2021 Convention - Popular Culture Interest Group Call for Papers and Panels

Popular Culture Interest Group
Call for Papers and Panels

Central States Communication Association (CSCA)
Annual Convention-Cincinnati, Ohio
March 23-28, 2021

Inspire

Submission deadline:  October 9, 2020 11:59 p.m. CDT
To submit: https://www.csca-net.org/aws/CSCA/pt/sp/callforpapers (available July 1)

You are cordially invited to submit competitive papers, panel discussions, and performance sessions for our 90th Annual Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. Members are encouraged to reflect on the theme of Inspire. Our many roles as teachers and scholars ask a great deal from us intellectually, emotionally, and relationally. Our annual conference provides us an opportunity to pause, reflect, connect, and reconnect with each other and with what inspired us to choose these lives we lead. When the conference is at its best, our connections often help us to reinvigorate our energy so that we can return to our homes to offer energy to our students, our colleagues, our families and friends, and our work. This is particularly true as we navigate through and out of the COVID-19 pandemic. How does our work inspire other individuals, communities, organizations, and societies toward their aspirations? How can we inspire our students? Each other?

The Popular Culture Interest Group is especially interested in works that examine popular culture in its many forms and functions. The group is open to all forms of scholarship, including empirical, critical, theoretical, and artistic inquiry.

Some things to keep in mind:

Submissions Requirements:

Papers: Only completed papers will be accepted. Papers must include a title and a brief abstract. Graduate students should type “STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. If the paper will be a graduate student debut, please type “DEBUT STUDENT” on the upper right- hand corner of the title page. To be considered a graduate student debut paper, (1) the author must be a graduate student, (2) the paper must have single authorship, and (3) the paper must be the author’s first paper to be presented at CSCA. Indicate if author(s) are CSCA members. Author names and any identifying information must be removed prior to submission.

Panels:  Please note that Panel submissions should include a rationale for the panel, a clear description of what the panel entails (either a list of papers, authors, and abstracts for paper panels; and a clear list of how time will be spent for discussion or activity panels). For paper panels, well-considered abstracts will always help with review and ultimate consideration – paper panels that do not include abstracts for individual papers or that only include a sentence description will likely not be sent out for review.  For discussion panels, ensuring that the overall abstract explains the purpose of the panel and, when possible, the connection to the conference theme, will create an advantage for the scoring process.

Special Session: This year the Popular Culture Interest Group will sponsor a special panel on using popular culture in the classroom. If you are interested in being on such a panel, please send an email to planner Jimmie Manning (jimmiem@unr.edu) that includes your name, affiliation, and 2-3 sentences about what you would talk about as part of that panel. Those who have unique, interesting, and exciting assignments, class projects, or applications of popular culture in the classroom are especially encouraged to be a part of this conversation.

Submissions for CSCA 2020 will begin July 1, 2020. You will find a link to the AI submission system at https://www.csca-net.org/aws/CSCA/pt/sp/callforpapers
