CSCA 2024 - Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity (SOGI) Caucus ...Call for Submissions

SEXUAL ORIENTATION & GENDER IDENTITY CAUCUS

Call for Papers and Panels

Central States Communication Association (CSCA)

Annual Convention – Grand Rapids, MI

April 2nd -7th, 2024

Incoherence: Failure, Futures, and Forgotten Messages

Submission Deadline: October 7, 2023, 11:59 pm CDT

The Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity (SOGI) Caucus invites submissions of competitive papers and panel proposals for the 2024 Central States Communication Association (CSCA) Convention in Grand Rapids, MI.

The purpose of the SOGI Caucus is to promote dialogue and scholarship on engaging issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity in the communication discipline. The caucus is interdisciplinary in nature, and a range of topics are welcome, including rhetorical, interpersonal, organization, inter/cultural, performance, auto/ethnographic, media, and/or critical scholarship. We especially encourage individuals to address issues related to the convention theme, Incoherence.

We invite scholars and activists to propose panels and papers that address the incoherence of hate and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. With the rise of anti-transgender legislation across the United States restricting healthcare, education, legal recognition, and the right to publicly exist, we need to explore the ways in which LGBTQ+ individuals continue to be marginalized, erased, and silenced. From bills attacking gender affirming treatments for minors to prohibiting drag performances to bathroom bans to “forced outings” and restrictions on school discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity, how can we make sense of the narrative of progress for LGBTQ+ individuals? How have we failed when it comes to LGBTQ+ equality?  How is our scholarship unintelligible and disconnected to application and practice? And how can incoherence be potentially a powerful tool for LGBTQ+ activism?

Please consider following the SOGI Caucus Facebook page to connect with others and ask for help, share resources, or start conversations. We encourage faculty, independent scholars, K-12 educators, community members, and undergraduate and graduate students to submit their papers and panel ideas so we can work together to create an outstanding program. Please see the details below for submitting your work to the SOGI Caucus.
